Jimmy Bullard’s Celtic loan deal collapses to Hull City’s disgust

• Hull furious at player’s ‘absolutely ridiculous’ wage demands
• Club’s Adam Pearson scathing about Bullard’s attitude

Jimmy Bullard’s proposed season-long loan deal with Celtic has collapsed after the Hull City midfielder failed to agree personal terms with the Glasgow club. The injury prone midfielder, Hull’s highest earner on around £50,000 a week, travelled to Scotland for talks with Celtic last week but, to the disappointment of Hull’s head of football operations, Adam Pearson, Bullard is now expected back in East Yorkshire this week.

“The deal is off… because of the absolutely ridiculous financial demands being made by the player,” said Pearson. “We have bent over backwards to try to make this happen and four weeks ago there was an agreement with Celtic in place over a year-long loan.

“But now it seems Jimmy wants extra cash on top and he has jeopardised the chance to play for a great club. Who would not want to play for Celtic with a chance of European football and silverware?

“Hull City were prepared to subsidise a year in Glasgow for Bullard. Let’s just say we would have made a significant contribution to the overall wage package. But unless he has a dramatic change of heart overnight, we expect him back here. He has had four weeks to make up his mind and has strung people along, frankly.”

Hull City chairman in no rush to appoint new manager

• Adam Pearson makes cost cutting his priority
• Iain Dowie to meet chairman and club owner

Adam Pearson, the Hull City chairman, will wait at least a month until appointing a manager at the financially troubled club.

Iain Dowie, who took charge for the final nine games of the season but failed to prevent relegation from the Premier League, wants the job but Pearson is making cost cutting – specifically trying to reduce the wage bill to £15m from £4om – his immediate priority.

Although no quick decision will be made on his future, Dowie is due to meet Pearson and Hull’s owner, Russell Bartlett, this week. On Wednesday Hull’s board will also meet Phil Brown, the manager they placed on gardening leave in March.

While there is understood to be no chance of Brown returning as manager, his settlement will be discussed. With Hull unable to pay the £1.4m owed for the one year outstanding on his contract as a lump sum it is likely he will be compensated in monthly instalments.

Dowie’s managerial manifesto enjoys support from within the KC Stadium dressing room – even though the former Crystal Palace and Charlton manager’s critics claim he “overtrains” his players.

Pearson, though, wants to be in a position to properly forecast Hull’s financial position next season – and ensure that entering either a company voluntary agreement or administration can definitely be avoided – before hiring a new manager.

Squad sheets: Hull City v Liverpool

No strangers to debt and disappointment, Hull City and Liverpool will be grateful to bring the curtain down on a season of dashed hopes. It is definitely Hull’s last Premier League game for at least 15 months and could well prove the final fixture in charge of these clubs for both managers. While few at Liverpool expect Rafael Benítez to remain at Anfield for much longer, no one knows whether Iain Dowie will get his wish and be kept on at the KC Stadium next term. Expect tears at the final whistle. Louise Taylor
